ABSTRACT:In this talk, I will discuss a recent project, Evidence-based Education based on Data Analytics - Moving towards a 360 Degree View of Students, that we have done together MIT on MOOC platform. Specifically, we formally design measures to evaluate the quality of teaching and learning. Then, based on the derived quality models, for individual learning, we will develop effective data mining techniques to detect outliers from course materials and students, and find those course materials with low quality and identify students having troubles in understanding course materials. For lectures, due to the lacking of labeled data sets, we will use transfer learning techniques to transfer successful teaching methods from one domain to another. The proposed techniques will automatically determine the matching domains for transfer learning and help teachers to apply successful teaching methods from a previously taught subject to a new one.
